New programme in Yuhua to improve help for frail elderly
SINGAPORE: A new programme has been set up at Yuhua constituency in Jurong GRC to improve the help available for elderly residents.
The "Health Ambassadors" programme was launched last Saturday, 22 January 2011 by the Senior Minister of State for Ministry of National Development and Ministry of Education and MP for Jurong GRC Ms Grace Fu at the opening of the new St Luke's ElderCare Centre.
The programme matches volunteers to elderly residents who are frail or living alone.
The volunteers will make regular house visits and monitor the health of these residents.
They can also refer residents to other healthcare providers, such as St Luke's.
The "Health Ambassadors" will also carry around portable devices to capture information about each elderly resident, such as their living conditions, mobility, health and language spoken.
The data will then be managed by Yuhua Citizens' Consultative Committee (CCC) to facilitate the matching of volunteers and other care providers.
Yuhua CCC hopes to make it easier for elderly residents to seek help, by roping in residents and grassroots leaders as volunteers.
St Luke's will train volunteers while also serving as a resource centre for those interested in caring for the elderly.
The new facility at Jurong East is St Luke's 9th centre, focusing on providing day care for the elderly.
